In een postapocalyptische toekomst is gezagshandhaving aan de verliezende hand. Een van de laatste agenten die nog probeert om gemotoriseerd gajes in het gareel te houden is Max (Gibson), die in zijn V8-Interceptor wegpiraten aanhoudt. Op een dag achtervolgt hij een lid van een gemotoriseerde bende, waarna de zaak vreselijk escaleert. Deze eerste voor een habbekrats gedraaide Mad Max-film is ruw en ongepolijst, maar Miller liet wel zien dat hij een fantastische actieregisseur is. Wat hij later nog eens bevestigde met Mad Max 2 (1981), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) en Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024). Tussendoor regisseerde hij ook nog kinderfilms als Babe (1998) en Happy Feet (2006).
