Plot[]
The game begins with Sunny Starscout in a field, worried that she's late for the Maretime Bay Day holiday. She is about to head into town, but notices her bag is missing. After chasing down the bunny that stole her bag (which acts as a general tutorial), she meets up with Shimmerwing and Izzy Moonbow. Shimmerwings serves as a guide to help the player if they are unsure of where to go, while Izzy explains that Sunny can use her unicorn powers to "Unicycle" at tables and decorate for the festival or fix bridges along the way. Sunny fixes the bridge from the Crystal Brighthouse into Maretime Bay and heads to meet up with Hitch.
Hitch asks for Sunny's help with herding bunnies that have escaped and then challenges her to the first minigame, Bunny Herding. After helping out, Hitch lets Sunny into Main Street to help with the festival.
While Sunny is helping out ponies on the street like Primrose, Sprout is performing sabotage of billboards to encourage racial hostility towards pegasus and unicorn ponies, and almost succeeds at it until he accidentally confesses to it and Sunny holds a short speech outside Canterlogic to calm the crowd down. Sprout attempts an escape on rollerblades, but is chased down by Sunny, with Sunny and her friends forgiving him in the end.
History[]
The game was classified as a G rating on January 31st, 2022 by the Australian Government[2].
The game was then added to the USK database with the age rating 0, and the genre "Jump 'n' run". It was play-tested for the Nintendo Switch on January 19th, 2022[3].
The game was made available for pre-order on the Target site on March 1st, 2022 with a release date of May 27th, 2022 and a MSRP of $39.99.
On March 8, 2022, a trailer was released[4].
It was released on Steam, official Steam code sellers like Humble Store, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 27th, 2022. This was followed up by a dedicated PlayStation 5 version on September 30th, 2022,[5] and an Epic Games Store release on December 15th, 2022.
The game was also available on the Google Stadia cloud service (which was accessible from the Chrome PC browser, Android, Chromecast, and iOS Safari) from June 28th, 2022, until the service closed in its entirety on January 18th, 2023. No video footage is known to exist of the Stadia version.
In part due to the game's short runtime, with casual playthrough time estimated at 2 hours and 100% completion at 3 hours, the game spawned an active speedrun community, especially in the first 2 months after release.
Version differences[]
Having been developed primarily with the Nintendo Switch in mind, there are not many differences between the versions.
The Steam version (but not the Epic Games Store version) received patches that make it possible to play with a keyboard, and both PC versions have a somewhat limited set of graphics options and the ability to run with uncapped framerate.
Physical copies on launch of the Nintendo Switch version had an exclusive Russian dub and subtitling that was removed from all other versions 1½-2 months before release, and which was removed from those copies too with a Day 1 patch. Fan mods exist to carry over the translation to the PC version.
The PlayStation 5 version makes use of the PS5 menu activity cards to display progress. An update for the Xbox One version that added dedicated Xbox Series X/S functionality, made it so that playing the game on Xbox Series X/S is believed (but not confirmed) to use the DirectStorage API to reduce loading times.
Technical info[]
Although some Outright Games games have had Xbox+Windows combined versions for digital sale on Microsoft Store, as well as Xbox Game Pass inclusion, the Microsoft Store page for Maretime Bay Adventure is for Xbox only and is not on Game Pass.[6]
Trivia[]
- The games story features Sprout in a significant plot role that is impossible to reconcile with either the canon of Make Your Mark or Tell Your Tale. The games plot shows that despite his heinous actions in A New Generation, Sprout is inexplicably still in a position of authority that allows him to instigate the conflict. Both Tell Your Tale and Make Your Mark, which premiered afterward, establish that Sprout was immediately fired from his job, went on the lam and was eventually reduced to doing community service as punishment for his crimes.
